What will your Veterinary Physiotherapy session involve?

Veterinary physiotherapy sessions firstly involve a discussion about your animal bringing together their history, current and past conditions, concerns you may have and your short and long term goals you would like to achieve.

A full musculoskeletal, spinal, joint and neurological assessment will be performed identifying postural changes, muscular imbalance and changes in tone + texture, joint range of motion and function, compensatory patterns and most importantly indicators of pain or discomfort. A full dynamic assessment seeing your animal walk, trot and perform specific movements to assess how your animal moves, identifying biomechanical dysfunction and indicators of pain and discomfort. These will be tied together and a treatment plan will be formulated and conducted based on the findings. homework and remedial exercise prescription will be provided at the end to complete between sessions.

Physiotherapeutic techniques

Following a full musculoskeletal assessment, a therapeutic treatment plan will be constructed for your animal to best suit their needs and provide the most optimal treatment. I offer a range of manual techniques, electrotherapies and remedial exercise and these are listed below.

Manual therapies

Manual therapies is at the core of what I do. It involves manual manipulation of soft tissue such as massage, myofascial release and stretching to provide therapeautic benefit.

It is useful for reducing pain, relieving muscle tension, improving flexibility and extensibility, and assisting with muscle strengthening and activation.

Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMFT)

Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy is the production of an electromagnetic field, which targets the cell membrane to restore cell function and activity.

It is primarily used to promote healing and provide pain relief. It is beneficial for fracture healing, arthritis, soft tissue swelling and acute and chronic pain.

TENS zara.png

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS)

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) is the use of a low voltage electric current produced by a device to stimulate the nerves and provide a form of pain relief by reducing pain perception through the release of endogenous opioids. This has a 4 hour carry over period.

Heat therapy

Heat therapy is the transmission of heat to the underlying tissue. This helps to increase blood flow and enhances the supply of oxygen and nutrients, the increased circulation aids the removal of chemical irritants, relaxes muscle tone and spasm, reduces viscosity and increases tissue extensibility and reduces pain by inhibiting nociceptive (pain) transmission.

This is primarily used for muscle tension and/or contracture, pain relief, arthritis and stiffness and to improve comfort and flexibility.

Phototherapy

Phototherapy, more commonly known as laser, is the application of light therapy in the form of photons. I have both Red light and Blue light applicators.

It is beneficial for wound healing, pain relief, soft tissue injuries, arthritis and infections.

Remedial exercise

Suitable remedial exercise, to assist with the rehabilitation and/or performance of your animal will be demonstrated during your session and prescribed on an individual basis to restore normal function, assist with muscle strengthening and improve proprioception, stability and balance.
